The On Luck nursing home in Donvale.
UPDATE 1.10pm: A GOAT attack at a Donvale nursing home has left three people injured.
Doncaster Constable Dianne Davidson said the goat – a seven-year-old billygoat aptly named Billy – initially attacked a gardener at the On Luck Chinese nursing home in Tindals Rd.
Constable Davidson said the gardener, 60, was trying to shoo the 80-90kg goat from a bucket of weeds when it “took exception” and “butted” him.
She said another man, about 70, tried to intervene, only to find himself on his back being butted by the fully horned animal.
Constable Davidson and her partner, Constable Rickilea Mitchell, hauled the “big goat” off the man, who was “conscious and breathing the whole time”.
She said the wife of the goat’s owner, understood to be a 20-year-old woman, injured her ankle when running to get help.
The owner of the goat, who lives in a neighbouring property, arrived, tied a rope to the goat’s horns and led it home.
Ambulance spokesman Paul Bentley said paramedics were called to a paddock just before 11am.
Mr Bentley said the two men suffered head injuries.
He said the three victims were given pain relief and one man was fitted with a neck brace.
The 70-year-old has been taken to Box Hill Hospital, while the remaining pair was taken to Maroondah Hospital, Mr Bentley said.
Constable Davidson said it was the first goat-related call-out experienced by either her or her partner.

The Foreign Office has apologised over a document suggesting the Pope should open and abortion clinic during his visit. The Foreign Office was last night forced to issue a public apology after an official document suggested Britain should mark the Pope's visit this year by asking him to open an abortion clinic, bless a gay marriage and launch a range of Benedict-branded condoms.
In a note, the official responsible for sending out the memo – a junior civil servant in his 20s – said: "Please protect; these should not be shared externally. The 'ideal visit' paper in particular was the product of a brainstorm which took into account even the most far-fetched of ideas."
Foreign secretary David Miliband was said to be "appalled", and Britain's ambassador to the Vatican, Francis Campbell, has met Holy See officials to voice the government's regret.
A Foreign Office spokesman said: "This is clearly a foolish document that does not in any way reflect UK government or Foreign Office policy or views. Many of the ideas in the document are clearly ill-judged, naive and disrespectful. The text was not cleared or shown to ministers or senior officials before circulation. As soon as senior officials became aware of the document, it was withdrawn."

A senior Iranian cleric says women who wear revealing clothing and behave promiscuously are to blame for earthquakes.
Iran is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries, and the cleric's unusual explanation for why the earth shakes follows a prediction by the president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, that a quake is certain to hit Tehran and that many of its 12 million inhabitants should relocate.
"Many women who do not dress modestly ... lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which increases earthquakes," Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi was quoted as saying by Iranian media. Women in the Islamic Republic are required by law to cover from head to toe, but many, especially the young, ignore some of the more strict codes and wear tight coats and scarves pulled back that show much of the hair. "What can we do to avoid being buried under the rubble?" Sedighi asked during a prayer sermon last week. "There is no other solution but to take refuge in religion and to adapt our lives to Islam's moral codes." Seismologists have warned for at least two decades that it is likely the sprawling capital will be struck by a catastrophic quake in the near future. Some experts have even suggested Iran should move its capital to a less seismically active location. Tehran straddles scores of fault lines, including one more than 50 miles long, though it has not suffered a major quake since 1830.
In 2003, a powerful earthquake hit the southern city of Bam, killing 31,000 people – about a quarter of that city's population – and destroying its ancient mud-built citadel.
"A divine authority told me to tell the people to make a general repentance. Why? Because calamities threaten us," said Sedighi, Tehran's acting Friday prayer leader. Referring to the violence that followed last June's disputed presidential election, he said: "The political earthquake that occurred was a reaction to some of the actions [that took place]. And now, if a natural earthquake hits Tehran, no one will be able to confront such a calamity but God's power, only God's power ... So let's not disappoint God."
The Iranian government and its security forces have been locked in a bloody battle with a large opposition movement that accuses Ahmadinejad of winning last year's vote by fraud.
Ahmadinejad made his quake prediction two weeks ago but said he could not give an exact date. He acknowledged that he could not order all of Tehran's 12m people to evacuate. "But provisions have to be made ... at least 5 million should leave Tehran so it is less crowded," the president said.
The welfare minister, Sadeq Mahsooli, said prayers and pleas for forgiveness were the best "formulae to repel earthquakes. We cannot invent a system that prevents earthquakes, but God has created this system and that is to avoid sins, to pray, to seek forgiveness, pay alms and self-sacrifice," Mahsooli said.

the world according to GDPPope Benedict XVI is embroiled in a deeply embarrassing scandal after it emerged that a senior member of his household has been implicated in a gay prostitution ring, along with a St Peter's Basilica chorister.
The latest sexual scandal to rock the Vatican came to light yesterday when it was revealed that the chorister, 29-year-old Thomas Chinedu Ehiem, had been sacked for allegedly procuring male prostitutes for a papal gentleman-in-waiting.
Angelo Balducci, a Gentleman of His Holiness who serves in the Vatican's Apostolic Palace, had negotiated with Ehiem, a Nigerian-born Vatican chorister, over the specific physical attributes of the men he wanted brought to him.
The details of how Balducci and Ehiem were caught out reads like a storyline from cult US crime drama The Wire, after police wiretaps captured the pair's incriminating conversations.
Balducci, who is also a senior Italian government official, had originally been under investigation for corruption. The wiretaps were set up as part of a police probe into the awarding of contracts to build public works. Balducci was arrested on corruption charges on February 10 - the allegations of prostitution emerged only later.
The transcripts suggest that over a period of around five months in 2008, Ehiem procured for Balducci at least 10 male prostitutes. They included "two black Cuban boys", a former male model from Naples and a rugby player from Rome.
The wiretaps also showed that at least one of the men was a seminarian, studying to join the priesthood. In one transcript, recorded in January, Balducci is quoted as asking Ehiem: "At what time does he have to return to the seminary?"
It is by no means the first time the Roman Catholic Church has been tainted by a sex scandal. In recent years several paedophilia scandals have thrown light on the abuse of children by priests in Ireland, Germany and the United States over decades. And in 2007 the Vatican suspended a senior official who was filmed apparently propositioning a young man in his office.

PEOPLE born overseas are less likely to be assaulted than those born in Australia, according to new Australian Bureau of Statistics data.
The national survey found that those born in Australia were more than twice as likely to be the victim of a physical assault.
It showed an assault rate of 3.6 per cent for Australian-born people, or 445,000 victims, compared with an assault rate of 1.7 per cent, or 82,000, for those born in other countries.
The new data comes as international debate rages over the extent of racism involved in the spate of attacks on Indian students.
The assault rate for people born in non-English speaking countries was 1.4 per cent.
The Crime Victimisation Survey found Victoria's assault rate of 3.3 per cent, or 142,000 victims, was above the national average of 3.1 per cent.
Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu seized on the report, saying it showed Victoria was not the safest state in the country, a claim regularly made by Premier John Brumby. ''Labor's policies have failed to properly protect Victorians, and violent crime is only increasing,'' he said.
Police Minister Bob Cameron said the survey confirmed the government faced a challenge to reduce Victoria's assault rate, but showed most Victorians felt safe.
''Our government has taken tough action to give police the powers they need to drive down assaults,'' he said.
The national Crime Victimisation Survey, conducted in 2008-09, asked more than 25,000 people aged 15 and older about their experience of crime.
It also found 77 per cent of female victims - as opposed to half of males - knew the offender, with just under half of the assaults occurring in the home.
| The tycoon was reportedly driving a Ferrari 57km/h (35mph) over the limit |
A Swiss millionaire has been handed down a record speeding fine of $290,000 (£180,000) by a court.
The man was reportedly caught driving a red Ferrari Testarossa at 137km/h (85mph) through a village.
The penalty was calculated based on the unnamed motorist's wealth - assessed by the court as $22.7m (£14.1m) - and because he was a repeat offender.
It is more than double Switzerland's previous record speeding fine - handed to a Porsche driver in Zurich in 2008.
In the latest case, the motorist was clocked speeding 57km/h (35mph) faster than the limit, according to the cantonal court in St Gallen, eastern Switzerland.
"The accused ignored elementary traffic rules with a powerful vehicle out of a pure desire for speed," the court said in its judgement.
Swiss media reported that the man owns a villa with five luxury cars, including the Ferrari.

"Something went wrong" Police surrounded Lidl supermarkets across Madrid and sniffer dogs examined the fruit section of every one of the discount supermarkets after a Lidl store worker found packages of cocaine inside the bananas he was putting on display. Lidl's said that the discovery was "a shock" and said it was cooperating with police, according to El Mundo newspaper. It appears that bananas were slit open and small packages of the drug hidden inside the fruit before it left Ecuador. A Lidl's store worker told of how "three or four police cars turned up in the carpark and sealed off the fruit section, before sending dogs through; they then put all the fruit on a central table and opened them. Occasionally they would shout out "here's one!" as they ripped the fruit apart looking for drug bags". Police say that they assume someone was to have intercepted the drug once it arrived in Spain. However, for whatever reason, Lidl representatives bought the fruit at open auction in Madrid's fruit market (Mercamadrid) before distributing it to supermarkets across Madrid.Cocaine infected bananas have been found at six different Lidl's across Madrid, as well as their Caceres and Plascencia stores, all supplied by Mercamadrid. Police say that obviously the supermarket had nothing to do with the drug, having simple bought the fruit at open market - Police are now trying to dis over why the drug traffickers did not intercept the drug before it reached open market. Lidl has removed all Madrid sourced bananas from sale across the central region of Spain, according to press reports. Early reports that the drug was actually heroin have been corrected. |
